With the development of intelligent transportation system (ITS), establish the traffic guidance system to provide dynamic, real-time traffic information to help drivers make reasonable path selection and en-route diversion has become a feasible traffic control strategy. Traffic guidance system is an important subsystem of intelligent transport system, and variable message sign is a common form of traffic guidance system. According to the phenomenon of Chongqing’traffic jam, to promote the city construct of "Traffic-smooth Chongqing", implementate the traffic management about "benefit the public" effective measures, to improve the status of part of the road traffic congestion, improve the traffic management intelligence level, Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau Traffic Yuzhong District Authority joint Science and Technology Commission jointly declared to the Municipal Science and Technology Commission in2009,"the main city of Chongqing traffic guidance demonstration project".This thesis is based on the research at home and abroad, considering characteristics of Chongqing City Road, combined with the "the main city of Chongqing traffic guidance demonstration project", introduced the system functions, design target, system of traffic guidance system software and hardware structure. According to the current traffic situation, proposes the strategy and method of design. Based on full knowledge of various forms of variable information board and technology parameters of vehicle detector, summed up the advantages and disadvantages of them. The integrated software platform for the design, gives the algorithm of intelligent guidance system. Finally taking the connecting road in Chongqing’s Yubei District, Jiangbei District and Yuzhong district as an engineering example, the result showed that the traffic guidance system to reduce the vehicle delay has made great results.
