Spillway is a type of sluice often used in hydraulic structure. In practice, spillways come in variousforms due to the limitations of geology, topography, engineering structures and the overall layout of thestructural arrangement. In order to design the most reliable spillway structure, prototyping and numericalsimulation were carried out to research and study the optimal layout arrangement of the spillway or itsspecial sections. This research made use of Alagou spillway as a reference for prototyping to study the velocitydistribution of discharge flow, water surface and pressure distribution. To counter erosion and atomizationcaused by the discharge flow from the flip bucket jets to the downstream river bed and the proposedartificial excavation mountain apron platform, the numerous experimentations proved that the use of adifferently shaped flip bucket structure could resolve the problems. Furthermore this could also alleviatethe need for manual excavation mountain apron platform which served as a better solution for downstreamenergy dissipation, scour protection, atomization and other issues.A three-dimensional numerical simulation was done on the Alagou spillway by using the softwareFluent, RNG k~turbulence model and VOF flow pattern free surface tracking model. The result was ingood agreement with that of the prototype.
