A Study On Low Density Dwellings Design For The Elderly

On the background of the aging society, there have been several retirementcommunities. Low-density dwellings have the advantage for the elders to live in.However, the present situation of dwellings design for elders is still far from satisfaction.Some designers do not pay enough attention to the specific design for elders whileothers just used the retirement communities as slogans. According to the mentionedsituations above, this thesis mainly focus on new-built and reformed low-densitydwellings design of ordinary and retirement communities.Firstly, this thesis analyzed and summarized the standard to choose the products’types of low density elders’ dwellings and the main points of dwellings design inforeign countries by the mean of document and case study.Secondly, described the demands of elders to the low density dwellings throughresearch and contrasted with the present construction status to take a look at theproblems about supply and demand.Then, took the dwellings designs in the Northern and Central Area in China asexamples, the thesis assessed low-density products using the standard of being suitablefor the elderly and discussed the proper designs of new-built and reformed elders’dwellings, including the proper location of stair, elevator, living room, bedroom andtoilet, and the possible connection of moving and sighting. Also, applyed to a series ofcommon low density dwellings designs.Finally, this thesis took applications to two real projects, a retirement communitynamed Huasheng International Retirement Community in Changsha and an ordinarycommunity named Xinhe in Beijing, to make possible practices according to thespecific situations.
