BOM (Bill of Material) system has been widely used in the automobile diemanufacturing enterprises. Because the formats of bill of material are changing varyingwith the automobile die manufacturing enterprises, and the present BOM system can onlygenerate the bill of material with one format, so the bills of material with other formatsmust be generated manually, which would greatly reduce the efficiency of die design andincrease errors in BOM. Therefore, the implementation of a universal BOM system whichis compatible with all kinds of BOM is very necessary.With the sufficient understanding of automobile panel die design process, paper has adetailed analysis of universal BOM system’s requirements and functions, and carries outthe template technology based on the structure of different enterprises’ bom, and then theanalysis and designing of system framework using modular designing method of softwareis accomplished. Finally, the development of universal BOM system based on templatetechnology is done. In addition, the system provides Body Blank Generation, RapidTwo-dimensional Label, Die Cost Estimation and so on, which reduce the workload ofgenerating BOM and improve efficiency of die design.Some key technologies of this system are studied in this paper. The compatibilitywith all kinds of BOM by using template technology; Automatic generation and real-timeexamination of part numbers; The concept of attribute parameter is presented, whichmakes full use of the information of part attributes and solves the problem of compatibilitywith irregular BOM tables.Some actual die assemblies are presented as examples, bills of material with differentformats are generated by the BOM system developed in this paper, so is irregular bills ofmaterial, which verifies the compatibility with all popular formats of BOM. By testingnumerous examples, it shows that the system has reached the industrial practical levelwith the characteristics of simple operation and stable performance.
