At present, the development of the smart grid has become a common choice for the world electric utilities which will respond to intelligent society in future, and become the development direction of the power system in the21st century. As an important foundation of the smart grid construction device,intelligent energy meter has played an important supporting role in smart meters grid information, digitization, automation and interactive. Therefore, the research and development of intelligent energy meter has an irreplaceable role in promoting the development of smart grid, intelligent energy meter technology has become one of the core technologies of development of smart grid. In accordance with China’s national conditions,National Grid Corporation developed and published a series of technical conditions and specifications according to their own needs.The optical module of intelligent energy meter on EPON mainly adopted accessable EPON system fiber-optical interface technology with load control, gateway and powerful communications capabilities so that it achieved intelligent energy meter cost control and load control to the home and could do real-time interaction with users.It considered intelligent energy meter as a network unit of smart grid and owned the advantages of good scalability, high reliability, low user cost, and high-speed transport property with zero error, which not only improved the energy meter working reliability and saved the energy meter’s hardware and software resources,but also provided an effective guarantee to achieve full coverage of information collection for state grid corporation and solved a major problem that concluded the whole collection and full coverage of information at power distribution side of smart grid, remote meter reading system onto network and electronic household appliance onto network.The embedded design and implementation of optical module of intelligent energy meter based on EPON adopted the development of embedded systems technology, Adding the embedded ONU optical communication module to intelligent energy meter, and encoding energy data and energyfee apparatus parametric in accordance with DL/T645-2007and the Q/GDW376.1-2009,and complete mutual communication protocol conversion based on connection-oriented TCP communication and asynchronous serial communication in order to the realization of the development of ONU optical module. The testing results show that it meets the needs of the provisions, and it has a certain value and development prospects.
