Communication network is an important component of the intelligent meter reading system, while the communication technology is the key to realize the remote intelligent meter reading system. Optical fiber meter reading based on EPON is the inevitable trend of development of the electricity meter reading industry at present, and future. It not only can support for remote communication and control, but can satisfy the real time and reliability of electric power meter reading, more can realize high broadband business access, etc.In this paper, the current domestic watt-hour meter communication mode are studied, and the research and analysis work is going to how to apply EPON technology to remote intelligent optical power meter reading system. The advantages and disadvantages of intelligent watt-hour meter of the RS-485bus, the PLC power line carrier and wireless communication are described, which draws the conclusions that the data of watt-hour meter of measuring and transmission of reliability and real-time performance is bad, transmission rate is low and bandwidth is too low, and cannot achieve the bidirectional data communication in the process of the meter reading. Power meter reading system solution comes forward, which includes the host, OLT and watt-hour meter with optical fiber carrier module. The meter fiber carrier module according to the user side of the watt-hour is designed and implemented, which is based on the remote intelligent optical power meter reading system for network scheme. The main job is as follow:(1) Analysis of traditional intelligent meter reading system of business functions such as watt-hour meter measurement and data transmission, meter fiber carrier module solution of the users’side of watt-hour is proposed based on the advantage of EPON and the requirements of fiber-optic broadband access, which not only can perform reliable, rapid and real-time meter reading but can increase the Internet business, etc.(2) The practical application environment of optical fiber carrier module is analyzed in the intelligent optical fiber meter reading system, which summarizes the function of module to be realized. Taking the power consumption and cost into consideration, hardware platform choose QCA8829launched by qualcomm.(3) Carrier module software design, analyzes the optical carrier module software design requirements, the software design adopts the interrupt and polling way to increase the CPU utilization, reducing power consumption requirements; Data stream processing, this paper analyzes the multi-type data on single fiber bi-directional communication, the methods of packet processing mechanism and a congestion management handle both meter reading data and network data; it is that using optical link automatically register solve the connection module with OLT by analysis the optical fiber network system; In order to overcome the disadvantages of whole meter reading system monitoring, standard and extended China telecom OAM realize intelligent management and control on the whole system; At the same time, analysis the transmission of various type data on single fiber of bi-directional communication, the processing of network data and meter reading data adopt the mechanism of data stream processing; Analysis the real-time performance and reliability of meter reading data, the function of realizing remote automatic connection, a serial port server, processing protocols data, protecting link security is realized by the TCP/IP connection to the host and serial communication to the watt-hour meter; A WEB pages interface are designed for the operation to user.(4) For the reliability, real-time and intelligent control and management of meter reading data, there are going to test network where optical fiber carrier module is. Packet loss rate is e-6orders of magnitude for a long time and0%for short time under the baud rate of9600, and home broadband around38M, the function and performance meet the design requirements.
