This essay illustrates the detailed process of the lighting design work for theKangba Art Center in Yushu, Qinghai Province, which is the author’s work in the jointeducation institute (Cui Kai Studio in China Architecture Design and Research Group).This work is based on the research of lighting environment of Tibetan traditionalarchitecture, focuses on the lighting information and dynamic simulation of chantinghall in which monks would read and chant every day. The lighting design strategy ischosen according to analysis of lighting environment of traditional architecture.The preliminary work includes the field measurement of lighting environment inthe Main Chanting Hall of Damkar Monastery, research on reading task of monks, and amodel built in software for dynamic simulation based on local climate information. Thepreliminary research provides a theoretical foundation of lighting design strategy. Divafor Rhino (with daysim engine)is used in dynamic simulation of lighting environment ofthe Main Chanting Hall, which leads an accurate and comprehensive knowledge of itslighting information. Photos with different exposure are combined into one HDR imagein Photosphere and analyzed in HDRScope. After the lighting design strategy is chosen,the author continues with further design work including lighting layout, decision oflighting fixtures and controlling of the surface of interior design. These whole worksconstruct the research-based design work in this essay.There are a lot of great works of lighting design for libraries, but they didn’t startwith the numeric analysis and research of traditional lighting environment, whichcannot be related to the traditional information. The similarities and differences betweenthe new projects and traditional lighting environment can be hardly evaluated. The goalof this research is to express the traditional Tibetan lighting environment in new lightingdesign project, which could combine the numeric analysis of lighting environment withmodern lighting design strategy. The final project could both fulfill the illuminancerequirements of library and express the tradition lighting environment as well.
