Study On Creating Strategy Of Street Space Based On The Spirit Of Place In The Old City Region Of Xi’an

Following the development of urbanization and mechanization, it is a very seriousphenomenon that streets in cities are blocked up by the heavy traffic. The humanizationstreet system which is functional diversification is replaced by the road network systembased on the traffic function. Street culture and gradually missing, along with the traditionalstreet gradually disappear.Xi’an is a historical and traditional city that the old city region is one of the mostimportant parts which is protected in time. The old city region texture has embodied andreflected the styles and cultures of this traditional city completely. However, nowadays, theold city region in Xi’an, in which part of social life of the original block network isdestroyed, missing native, the functions of the traditional streets have been changed and theculture has been ignored, the unique features of the streets are lost gradually, Thus thestreets are lack of the spirit of place. Hence, it is inevitable to recover and develop thetraditional streets, to satisfy the requirement of the modern life, to create the streets whichhave the spirit of place in Xi’an.This paper selects the streets within Xi’an Ming City Wall Street as the research object,in the spirit of place as the angle of view, with the relation between people, space, place asthe main research contents, literature research method, survey research method, CaseApproach method, Classification method, inductive method as the main research methods.The innovation of this paper lies in the old city region streets typed, research and evaluationbased on the streets of different types to put forward the strategies for creating thecorresponding.In this paper, through the study on the historical evolution of the old city of Xi’an streetspace, to extract the traditional street lifestyle worth learning, to reveal the relationshipbetween street space and the spirit of place, and street space reveal the place spirit ofdiversity of demand. Through the investigation of the old city street, according to streetfunction, according to different landscape characteristics could be classified into5kinds, named Traffic Street, residential street, cultural commercial street, commercial street andcomprehensive tourism, residential streets; of which8typical streets of in-depth research,summed up the problems in the street: identity weakening, aboriginal deletion, intercourseplace, space environment. On this basic, starting from the perspective of the spirit of place,different types of street from the social structure, historical and cultural street, streetfunction, form and scale, intercourse place, environment and facilities, commercial formseven aspects of research, put forward a strategy of the old city of Xi’an Street space.
