Highway tunnel constitutes an important part of contemporary road transport inshortening road transport mileage, reducing road travel time and being an importantchannel connecting both sides of highway. However, when an accident happens inside thetunnel, the hazard compared to that of road accident is more severe with loss of human life,damage to economies as well as huge social impact. Therefore, the research on highwaytunnel safety operations and security check technology is particularly important.Focusing on safety operation management of Qinling Zhongnan Mountain extra longhighway tunnel as research subject, via analyzing highway tunnel dangerous goodstransportation accident characteristics both domestically and internationally and currenthighway tunnel safety operations, based on characteristics of Zhongnan Mountain extralong highway tunnel, this paper analyzed impact of dangerous goods tunnel transport totunnel safety operations, and developed a long tunnel safety inspection system consideringthe various existing dangerous goods detection technology, road traffic flow forecasttechnology and road electromechanical technology etc, therefore; provided technicalmeans and scientific basis for operational safety and scientific management of longhighway tunnel. The main contents of this paper are:1, achieving effective inspection oftransport vehicles through analysis of passing rate, penetration capability, image quality,safety and cost of different inspection techniques, as well as selection of high energy X-raytransmission imaging equipment;2, proposed calculation method of dangerous goodsvehicle numbers by analyzing results of the Zhongnan Mountain tunnel traffic flowforecast;3, designed Qinling Zhongnan Mountain tunnel security checkpoint checkprogram and workflow and proposed checkpoint comprehensive check system design bycomparing safety checkpoints operating modes.The research result has been successfully applied to Qinling Zhongnan Mountainhighway tunnel safety checkpoint design. Since the checkpoint construction completion inJanuary2011, with safe and reliable inspection technology and well-organizedmanagement measures, dangerous goods inspection has meet the requirements of safety,accuracy and efficiency, therefore; safety inspection task to vehicles entering Qinling Zhongnan Mountain tunnel has been successful completed. The practical results haveshown that the application of tunnel safety inspection system can significantly reduce thenumbers of dangerous goods vehicles through tunnel, and effectively improve QinlingZhongnan Mountain highway tunnel operation safety and reliability.
