Weir is common to see in the hydraulic engineering as diversion and spillway building,Widely applied in sluice, spillway, culvert pipe and culvert inlet and other engineering. Thethree basic weir type is thin wall weir, practical weir and broad crested weir. With the smalland medium-sized reservoirs reinforcement work going,in actual engineering, appeared a fewnew weir types which conducive to the practical application。WES compound weir is one ofthese kinds. WES compound weir is a weir formed from WES weir by widening the weircrest in the flow direction, the hydraulic characteristics are effected by the increased thicknessof weir crest and are different from the standard WES weir and broad crest weir. At somereservoirs reinforcement work, transformed WES weir into WES compound weir whencondition satisfied, not only convenient construction but also cost saving.WES compound weir is a new weir type,because of the widen of the weir crest and theprofile difference, its discharge capacity is different from general WES weir or broad crestedweir. At present the WES compound weir is still in the initial stage of exploration, and therehas no experience for reference formula on the discharge capacity calculation. Therefore, theresearches on hydraulic characteristics of WES compound weir have favors for people todeeply understanding this new type and can better serve the practical production.In this paper, using a model experiment method to research the hydraulic characteristicsof the WES compound weir. Test by changing the thickness of weir crest and the height ofupstream to form different body size, records the flow pattern, the water line and the weirsurface pressure data under the different body size of WES compound weir. According to thetest data combined with the related theory to study of the WES compound weir type division,discussed the classification standards of the WES compound weir divided into WEScompound practical weir and WES compound Broad crested weir, and the WES compoundpractical weir into high weir and low weir. In the high weir and low weir division introduces anew weir thickness effect. In addition, according to weir type classification gives dischargecoefficient formula under the design water level, which provide a basis for future study.
