Research On Container Management Of A Company In West Pearl River Delta Area

With the deepening of process of global economic integration and booming ofinternational trade, international container transportation is now rapidly developing.Under such an economic environment, the shipping company’s business scope is notjust limited to the hub but also extends to feeder ports in the inland area. However dueto location restrictions in feeder ports, container repair job can not be well arrangedeasily, so it requires a better management on container operations to achieve a balanceof container usage.In this thesis, the object is to study A company’s container management in westpearl river delta area including its container reposition, inspection and repair. The maincontents include four aspects as the following:First, this thesis reviewed the related theories of container management. In this part,it made a brief introduction of the container definition and container size at first, andthen reviewed the related theories of container management. Finally, it made an outlookon container management trends.Second, this thesis summarized the status of the feeder ports in west pearl riverdelta area and introduced A company’s container operation mode in this area. The westpearl river delta area mainly includes the cities of Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Jiangmen inwhere more than10terminals are located. In this area, A company assign reposition jobto barge carrier (same as “connected carrier”) to arrange container transportation anddeal with container service provider (same as M&R vendor) for container inspectionand repair.Third, this thesis analyzed the status and problems of A company’s containermanagement:From the aspect of container reposition operation, it analyzed the reason of emptycontainer reposition firstly; then outlined the status and problems of A company’scontainer management of operation in reposition. From the aspect of containerinspection and repair, this thesis firstly made a brief introduction of standard ofcontainer inspection and repair; then outlined the status and problems of A company’scontainer management of operation in container inspection and repair.Fourth, based on A company’s container management analysis, this thesis proposed some optimization strategies:From the aspect of container reposition operation, it brought out some optimizationstrategies. The optimization strategies including forecasting the demand of containervolume by the Regression Model, and adjust operation procedure for empty repositionrequest, etc. From the aspect of container inspection and repair, it brought out someoptimization strategies. The optimization strategies including: Coordinate withconnected carrier and M&R vendor ensuring container status updated in accurately andtimely; proceeding Quality Appraisal Program (in short of “QAP”) for on site check atrepair zone; implementing the management method of balance score card (in short of“BSC”) to assess M&R vendor’s service. After practicing the optimization strategies, Acompany can manage M&R vendor’s service, maintaining high quality of containerinspection and repair, shortening the down time of damage container.This thesis focused on study A company’s container operations in feeder ports, itmainly researched A company’s container reposition, inspection and repair. Theseresults can be good references for other shipping lines’ container management.
