As the red light turns to green one at the urban road intersections, the velocity of vehiclestarting wave,which will be initiated by the vehicle successive start-up in real traffic flowswith a certain speed along the motorcade upstream propagation velocities, is one of theimportant parameters to the reasonable traffic signal timing. Therefore, this work aims tostudy velocity algorithm of vehicle starting wave and its prediction at the microscopic point.Specific work is as follows:Firstly, the paper analyzes the velocity algorithm of vehicle starting wave based ontraffic psychology and the physical mechanism of car-following. It points out that a relativelygreat error was aroused by the characteristic vehicle length instead of the actual one in theprevious validation experiment, as the error led to the decreasing credibility in the results ofverification. The research launches a new traffic survey for the process of the vehicle start-upon the driveway at Wuzhou city intersections. The survey data is used to re-validate feasibilityof the proposed algorithm. According to the experimental results, the velocity algorithm canbe used to predict the velocity of vehicle starting wave judged from the real traffic flows in areal-time and a scientific way.Based on the rule that the average velocity can be judged by the total propagation lengthout of the propagation time or the average velocity between the vehicles in real traffic flows,With the application of traffic psychology and the physical mechanism of car-following, theresearch deduces a new velocity algorithm of vehicle starting wave at the urban roadintersections based on the just noticeable difference and uses the actual measured trafficsurvey data to re-validate feasibility of it. According to the experimental results, the newalgorithm can be used to predict the velocity of vehicle starting wave effectively when the redlight turns to green one at the urban road intersections.Creatively, the research designs a set of velocity prognostic system of vehicle startingwave speed based on the new velocity algorithm. The system is designed to contain threefunctional modules: information collection system, information processing system andrepresentation system. The paper presents the principles of the functional modules, technicalrequirements, and software and hardware design. The information collection system has areal-time collection of the related vehicle information under the help of induction coil anduses monolithic integrated circuit to process the signals. Information processing system worksunder the calculation of the velocity algorithm of vehicle starting wave which is based oninformation collected by the information collection system. The display system is formed by nixie tube. It is used to display the velocity of vehicle starting wave calculated by theinformation processing system.In the end, the research evaluates the process of information collecting and displayingand provides full system emulation. As a result, it predicts the velocity of vehicle startingwave under the help of the laboratory model, which set up by the velocity prognostic system.It also evaluates the function of the velocity prognostic system. Both the simulation resultsand the research data show that the system is able to predict the velocity of vehicle startingwave at a real time based on the actual traffic condition on the road.
