During the last twenty-five years, the manner in which products are designed, developed,and manufactured within the world has undergone revolutionary change. The engineeringdepartment, known for its steady before, also has been challenged because they are in fact thefirst link of production.Traditional approaches are no longer adequate in meeting the challenge.In response to widespread demand, experiment design has emerged as the premier tool inallowing technical groups to make faster, more informed decisions about product concept,designs, and processes. Not surprisingly, it has assumed the focal point of our involvement inproduct development.For experimental design techniques to be applied effectively, an environment for theiruse must be in place. First, experimental design is a strategic weapon that allows companiesto compete successfully in the global market. Second, the development, design andmanufacturing divisions within a given company must all wisely apply experiment designtechniques in order to achieve maximum effectiveness.Escalator is special equipment, whose design must be robust. And an auxiliary brake ofescalator is the last protection to the safety of passengers. Its importance is self-evident. Whenelectrical devices escalator failed to work, auxiliary brake, as mechanical braking device,must retard the escalator which is accelerating down due to gravity of the passengers. Asapplication research of DOE, the key is to combine the operations management system for thetheory innovation, expansion and dispersion in industry.A problem occurred at the designing of the auxiliary brake system of A Escalator. Thereis a serious instability, and this defect will result in cost rising, and the product will not bedelivered on time.In order to make the product performance meet the requirements, meanwhile, no greatlyraising of design costs, one solution to this problem is to optimize the original design. The useof quality management tools will lead the application of DOE. Today, radically developmentof information technology makes it very convenient to use the computers to processtraditional statistics data. Moreover, computer-aided design applications in mechanical designmake the product model more intuitive, comprehensive and accurate, which created favorableconditions for the establishment of the experimental design parameters. The application ofDOE to auxiliary brake of A Escalator and its optimization has universal significance in heavyindustry. Practice proved that the application of DOE in the optimization to auxiliary brake has been succeeded. Meanwhile, such application based on the quality management system,in comparison with the less using in industry of China, has its special meaning and shows itsinnovation. After the application of optimal design, the key performance of productsignificantly improved in reliability, cost savings respects. Also, the practical value of thisapplication shows up starkly.
