New Town Theory originated in British in19th century. It had been one of the most important solutions for the problems of big cities in western countries. Afterwards it had set off a worldwide construction boom, meanwhile New Town Theory itself had been improved and completed. Since the1950s, China began to learn this New Town Theory from western countries and during more than half a century New Town has been in a continuous stage of development in China. Nowadays New Town has almost become a dominant phenomenon in China’s urban construction. With the transformation of our economic and social development, New Town in China has reached into a new stage and plays an indispensable role in the Urbanization process and expansion of urban spaces. So far the traditional framework of New Town Theory has not been able to fully explain the development of New Town in China. This thesis takes the implications for New Town Theory evolvement from current development of New Town in China as theme, form the perspective of its comprehensive development process, aims to build the theoretical system of Chinese New Town, with a case study of Jiangning.Firstly, from reviewing the research contents of traditional New Town as well as Chinese New Town, the thesis build the research framework containing internal features, external relations and development mechanisms. Then the thesis discusses the differences between Chinese New Town and traditional New Town Theory in the scale, functional revolution, relations between New Town and central city, role in the region and analyzes the how the economic and social situations after China’s Reform&Open, Urbanization strategy, the changes of administrative divisions and urban-rural integrated development together affect the New Town in China. In the part of case study, the thesis mainly analyzes the growth process of Jiangning from an agriculture county to development zone and now to a comprehensive new city, and according to the theoretical framework above, concretely researches the internal features, external relations and development mechanisms of Jiangning. In conclusion, the thesis points out that Chinese New Town just followed the name "New Town" form western New Town Theory, nevertheless from the essence of its development, it has not been the "New Town" which aims to relieve the pressures of big cities. It largely differs from the New Town Theory in scales, functional position and regional interaction and etc.. New Town in China, developed so far, is more of means of the expansion of urban space, the carrier of urbanization and urban-rural integration and greatly affects the overall picture of urban development in China. Also because the background and mechanism are changing, New Town in China is in an intensely dynamic revolution and growing differently from the traditional New Town Theory.
