The Research On The Transformation Of Old Industrial Buildings To Exhibition Buildings Based On Symbiosis Mode

Dilapidated industrial buildings are put in a predicament by the urban renewalwhich contains the process of industrial restructuring and environmental improvement.In the meanwhile, the information society’s appetite for exhibition buildings isincreasing rapidly. To adapting those old industrial space as exhibition buildings useshould be a practical and mutualistic solution to meet this demand gap. Further more,seen from the successful cases, from home to abroad, this conversion can alsoimprove the development of urban culture variety, preserve the shared memory andenrich the culture life of the citizens.How can the industrial site used to serve standard manufacturing transform into adistinctive display space and meet all its demands? The paper argued that the twoaspects of a contradiction are dialectical interdependent on each other, and discussedthe philosophy of symbiosis, extracted the concepts as “sanctuaries”,“intermediaryzone” and “symbiotic status” in order to establish a systematic symbiotic model tosolve this issue.In the following part,the study started with clarifying the meaning of the words“sanctuaries” and “intermediary zone”. The basic principles of reconstruction, designrequirements, the value of the transformation and the matched and changeableelements were regarded as the native bases of the symbiotic model. By analyzing amass of cases in the area,the paper highlighted the role of urban catalyst andsummarized the symbiotic strategies from two aspects of rebuilding the relationshipbetween city and the building,and transforming and reconstructing of the buildingitself. Then, the paper also summarizes the relationship between the two types ofbuildings in the design of light environment,by increasing illumination of exhibitionspace and improving the quality of light to sum up the symbiotic conversion measuresof light environment.Last,the paper tested and verified the symbiotic model thesuccessful case of Tate Modern,and putting it into practice in the renewal of SwanLake power station.Thus, the model was summarized and deepened through the twoprojects offering both theoretical and practical supports.
