The effective sealing of rotary vanes is a key parameter to guarantee themagnitude of the adequate output torque of rotary vane actuator (RVA), which canonly be achieved when the pressure of vane sealing contact is higher than that ofthe sealed liquid in the actuator chamber. As a result, the magnitude anddistribution of the contact pressure on both the radial and axial sections of RVAseals plays a significant role in sealing performances. The present study deals with the formulation of the mechanics of vane sealsof rectangular cross-section and window shape. The sealing mechanism of vaneseals has been investigated. After constructing the mathematical and computationalmodel of vane seals, results are obtained for the distribution of the contact pressure. These are followed by an extensive parametric study to establish the effects ofvarious parameters on contact stress, such as the effects of the initial interferences, sealed pressure, and seal corner radius. Then the finite element (FEA) analysis ofthe contact stress is carried out based on linear and non-linear models. The resultsof two models agree perfectly with each other, which in a way justifies thesimplification when it comes to material in the mathematical model. Afterwards, the results gained by linear FEA were compared with those by mathematicalsimulation. The comparison showed great agreement and verified the rationality ofthe former mathematical model.
