Recently, Six Sigma has been become one of the most important management methodsin the world and brought enormous benefit to many enterprises, and played an irreplaceablerole comparing with others in the aviation field for extremely strict requirements. Theapplication study was rarely seen in aviation research institute, so people were not very clearabout the actual application situation. So far, Six Sigma study was focused on qualitativeanalysis and theoretical discussion in aviation research field, the procedures were mainlyintroduced by training. It was mostly theoretical narration with practical application insupport, and the study combining with cases was rarely seen.An institute was focused on aero engine development and production. It had no massproduction site and the pressure of cost reduction, and was in transition situation fromimitation to independent development during the process of product development. Manyproblems were needed to deal with and little experience could be referred in the process ofindependent development. At the same time, development means and method werecomparatively simple, and product quality was mainly verified by test samples whichbelonged to after verification. Design quality was not controlled. Therefore, based on SixSigma experience and samples at home and abroad, application study was implemented inthe institute.Firstly, application background and status of Six Sigma at home and abroad wereintroduced; the classification of Six Sigma DMAIC and DFSS was also introduced at thesame time, and the differences and similarities between them were analyzed. Then, theapplication study of DFSS that suitable for institute was presented. The organization modestudy by means of multi functional team was introduced from DFSS delivery. Thedifferences and similarities between DFSS and development process of institute wereconducted. DFSS that suitable for institute was also attempted. The specific practice ininstitute was described. The implementation process of project startup, planning, controlling,closeout, risk control was also described by narrating and analyzing identification, concept,design, optimization, verification during the implementation of project. Finally, applicationscope and experience were summarized by the DFSS promotion and project implementation.Experience was provided to institute for DFSS delivery. The purpose and significance of application study were to gradually change qualitymanagement from after improvement to pre control by completely new mode of productdevelopment which can change the concept into reality perfectly. The fundamental startingpoint was close coordination between development team and managers to do the right thing,use the right tool at the right time, prevent quality problems and accomplish it at the firsttime. The top three objectives of product development, quality improvement, cost reductionand cycle reduction, were realized by clear development process, balanced use of Six Sigmatools and strict project management methods.The purpose was to provide intuitive and perceptual understanding from theeasy-to-understanding and operable view. In order to provide experience for delivering andapplying for other institutes, scope of DFSS application and attention were summarized bythe choice of DFSS project, establishment of multi functional team and implementation ofproject.
