In recent years, although specific construction technology has reached a high level in Chinese construction industry, little attention has been put on the coordination management. Lots of general contractors and subcontractors encounter communication problems, which are attributed to poor communication and lack of coordination. By building standardized coordinated management model, construction corporations can rapidly improve communication effect and in the meantime decrease rates of project delays. As a result, general contractors can cooperate better with subcontractors during project processes.To begin with this Study, I conducted field interviews and surveys relating to staffs of the project management department and subcontractors. Secondly, I analyzed the current status and problems in executive process, finding several exposed communicating issues, such as vague job responsibilities differentiation in divisions, poor cooperation between collegues in project management department, great dependency of on site meetings, and nonheirarchical communication, etc. Based on Mintzberg’s five coordination mechanism theory, this study provides five ways of coordination to improve communication between A company and its subcontractors, and further discuss coordination management of A company in two perspectives, which are the internal management in project management department and the external alliance relationship with subcontractors. By building internal standard project management processes and performance appraisal mechanisms to achieve effective supervision to subcontractors, to control the overall project process, and ultimately to fulfill both sides higher expected return.In this thesis, the conclusion was come up that a main contractor such as A company need to focus on the establishment of a standardized coordination mechanisms. On one hand, with the five coordination models proposed in this thesis, a main contractor like A company is supposed to obtain communication efficiency and effectiveness withsubcontractors. On the other hand, the proposed standardized project management processes and performance appraisal mechanisms could improve internal management in project management department and optimize multi-party relationships. Therefore, a better coordination management between main contractor and subcontractors could be achieved.
