The vehicle gets contact with the ground by its tires. The wheels of the vehicle interact with the ground to realize moving ahead, accelerating, braking and turning around. Therefore, the working condition of tires is crucial to the driving security of one vehicle. A catastrophic traffic accident can happen due to a sudden tire burst while driving. In this paper, the dynamic response of the vehicle with a flat tire will be analyzed, and the correct operation strategy will be explored, to ensure the security of vehicles and people.First of all, a comparative research was carried out for tire models, such as physical model, empirical-semiempirical model and finite-element model. The UniTire model, an empirical-semiempirical model, was chosen to establish the tire burst model. Then, a vehicle dynamics model was created using CarSim software, and the dynamic responses for a vehicle with a flat tire were simulated. Considering the symmetry of the vehicle in straight-line driving, simulation was just carried out for the vehicle with a tire bursting in the left front wheel or the left rear wheel. The effect of some parameters (like adhesion coefficient of road, driving speed, vehicle mass, braking pressure and response time for braking) on vehicle dynamic was analyzed. According to the result of parameter effect, the correct operation strategy was proposed for the vehicle with a burst tire, and it was also validated by simulation analysis. For the vehicle driven by the front wheels, when a front tire bursts, the vehicle will be driven to the same direction of the burst tire. However, when a rear tire bursts, the vehicle will be driven to the opposite direction of the burst tire. When the vehicle is in straight-line driving with a high speed, a burst in a front tire is much more dangerous than a burst in a rear tire. Because the burst in a front tire will deteriorate the steering controllability, and the heavier front axle will result in greater lateral deviation and lateral displacement, it is easier to trigger a crash accident. Based on the simulation result and parameter analysis, after a tire bursts, the driver should rapidly take intermittent braking with a moderate pressure and adjust the steering wheel, while slamming the brake due to panic can result that the vehicle loses control and lead to a serious accident.
