With the trend of modern ships to be high speed, large scale, specialization, the shortcomings of the ships with traditional propulsion systems have gradually emerged. The territory waters of our country is vast with abundant marine resources in it. The exploitation of the marine resources requires the performance of the ship to be more excellent. Moreover, as the main part of the shipping business, the performance of the ship itself will influence the development of the industry as well. Hydraulic transmission has the advantages such as higher mass specific power, better safety performance. Different from the traditional propulsion system, the propeller is connected to a hydraulic motor which is installed in a pod that is can be rotated in360degree. It is called Hydraulic podded propulsion system. This propulsion system has the advantage of the hydraulic transmission and can realize vectored thrust of the ship.In this thesis, a hydraulic propulsion system for a2320t public service vessel has been designed. According to the parameters of the ship, Taylor’s method is used to estimate the ship resistance then the design of the whole system is fulfulled. In the process of the preliminary design for the propeller, MATLAB programme is used instead of the propellerdiagram to get the optimum revolution, pitchratio and open water efficiency of the propeller thus improving the design efficiency. In the design of the propulsion system, the performance parameter of the main part of the system is determined on the base of matching calculation completed the lectotype design according to the product of the REXROTH company and managed to get the system schematic. The power bond graphs is utilized to deduce the state of equation of the submodel in the propulsion system, which laid the foundation of the simulation. In the process of the simulation, AMEsim is applied to analyze the influence of different factors to the performance of propulsion system, such as control signal of the hydraulic pump, piping layout and different load of the system.
