The technology of construction steps forward with the development ofsociety. With the change of social ideology, European architecturalthought also changes, there are many building related reform movement. The original cultural and historical significance of building disappearsgradually but its social and political function becomes obviousincreasingly. Such a turn comes from the movement of modernistic design. There are four parts in this dissertation, analyzes the modernisticarchitectural thought, seeks the nature of building from the formationand development of modernistic architectural thought, finds a proper andbeneficial architectural thought for social development. The first part mainly states the origin of modernistic architecturalthought. Discusses how the change of social class and social thoughtinfluences the change of architectural though in different social period, since the origin of European architectural thought--ancient Greek andancient Roman architectural thought. The second part mainly explores the development of modernisticarchitectural thought, presents the importance and necessity of itsformation. Modernistic architecture is the product of social development, reflects the political, economic and cultural transformation of Europeansocial changing era.The third part mainly analyzes why the modernistic architecturalthought alienates. On one hand it is because of the influence from externalenvironment: after World War II, in order to save the social economy andmediating social contradictions, capitalism uses modernisticarchitectural design as the tool. On the other hand it is because of the contradiction in modernistic architectural thought itself: modernisticarchitectural thought is a democratic thought established for serving thepublic by a small group of elite, then evolves into middle class-served,monotonous and dictatorial design style finally. The fourth part reflects on the predicament brought by modernisticarchitectural, and discusses the fundamental reason why modernisticarchitectural thought brings human the predicament of “survive”and“dwelling”, that is, the purpose of build is the development ofcapitalist economy rather than simply human "dwelling" in the late yearsof modernistic architecture, which leads to the crisis of nature and humansociety. The end of this part discusses "why build" and "how to build"and gives an example--architectural form and style under the Scandinaviaarchitectural thought. Now most of the Chinese cities are still rapidly developing.Modernistic architectural thought is not far away from our lives, theyreflect the real condition that how we exist in contemporary society allthe time, and promote us to explore a whole new life. The author insiststhat a reasonable and excellent architectural design should make a shiftfrom "meet people’s basic survival need" to "create wonderful life" forhuman beings; pay more attention to the inherent quality of design whilefocus on function so as to make the design full of "beauty" and"humanization"; emphasize on the nature, developing harmoniously as wellas sustainably while concern with human sense in order to build our homesand pursue a "poetic dwelling".
