Taking as a new form of urban landscape, vertical greening has aroused people’s concerngradually and used widely. Climbing plants are the main material to achieve the vertical greening,it is very important to do in-depth research and develop resources. China is abundant in climbingplants, but only a few have been developed for use. The evaluation system has not beenestablished on climbing plants introduction and breeding. In this paper, the landscape applicationof several forms of climbing plants in the central part of Nanjing city would be discussed bymeans of survey and statistics about common climbing plants in Nanjing. In this paper,10climbing plants(Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Wisteria sinensis,Euonymus fortunei, Hedera helix, Trachelospermum jasminoides, Campsis grandiflora, Lonicerajaponica, Akebia quinata, Rosa multiflora ’carnea’)were selected for the quantitative assessmentof ornamental value and ecological function, and a evaluation model was established. Theresearch provided both theoretical bases for the reasonable use and methods of assessment, aswell as systems for the selection and breeding of new materials and varieties.1. The survey concluded that Nanjing has26kinds of climbing plants, some species using inhigh frequency. Main pattern of vertical greening are traditional way: wall greening, pergolagreening, fence greening, column greening and sprawling greening.2. Analytic hierarchy process was applied to evaluate ornamental characteristic of10climbing plants, The result indicated that of the10was: Euonymus fortunei>Campsisgrandiflora>Parthenocissus tricuspidata>Hedera helix>Wisteria sinensis>Parthenocissusquinquefolia>Rosa multiflora ’carnea’>Lonicera japonica>Akebia quinata>Trachelospermum jasminoides.3. Quantitative assessment on the ecological functions of climbing plants, quantitativestudies on the carbon-oxygen equilibrium and transpiration capabilities of10climbing plantsusing a portable photosynthetic analyzer Li-6400.(1) The capability of carbon-oxygen equilibrium was ranged as: Parthenocissus tricuspidata>Lonicera japonica>Parthenocissus quinquefolia>Hedera helix>Trachelospermumjasminoides>Euonymus fortunei>Wisteria sinensis>Rosa multiflora ’carnea’>Campsisgrandiflora>Akebia quinata.(2) The capability of cooling effect was ranged as: Parthenocissus tricuspidata>Lonicerajaponica>Parthenocissus quinquefolia>Wisteria sinensis>Campsis grandiflora>Hederahelix>Euonymus fortunei=Rosa multiflora ’carnea’=Trachelospermum jasminoides>Akebiaquinata.(3) The capability of the sulfur dioxide absorption was ranged as: Lonicera japonica>Hedera helix>Euonymus fortunei>Campsis grandiflora>Trachelospermum jasminoides> Parthenocissus tricuspidata>Parthenocissus quinquefolia>Wisteria sinensis>Rosa multiflora’carnea’>Akebia quinata. The capability of the chlorine absorption was ranged as: Euonymus fortunei>Hedera helix>Wisteria sinensis>Lonicera japonica>Parthenocissus tricuspidata>Trachelospermumjasminoides>Campsis grandiflora>Rosa multiflora ’carnea’>Akebia quinata>Parthenocissusquinquefolia.(4) The result indicated that Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Parthenocissus quinquefolia andAkebia quinata possessed of a higher dust-blocking ability.4. Analytic hierarchy process was applied to establish an evaluation model of climbingplants, and the evaluation was done on their application effect. Integrated evaluating,Parthenocissus tricuspidata is the most valuable plant among the10climbing plants. The othersare Euonymus fortunei, Campsis grandiflora, Hedera helix, Parthenocissus quinquefolia,Trachelospermum jasminoides in turn.
