In order to study the effect of different substrate ratios and microbial agent on growth and development of cucumber plug seedling, choosing the properest substrate composition through studying compound substrate mixed with commodity substrate of seedling(The main component is peat.), vermiculite and sheep manure at different volume ratios on the growth and development of cucumber. Then adding microbial agent to the properest substrate composition to cultivate cucumber. The results showed that,1. The physical and chemical characteristics of commodity substrate(CK) and commodity substrate:sheep manure:vermiculite=6:3:1(S3)were in the proper range. But sheep manure:vermiculite=3:1(S3) went against seedling growth. Because its total porosity was relatively lower and pH was slightly higher.2. The emergence rate of seedlings under commodity substrate:sheep manure: vermiculite=6:3:1(S3) was more than95%and the dry weight, root volume, root activity, root shoot ratio, seedling strength index, G value and soluble sugar content of seedling were better than other treatments. Therefore S3was more suitable to be the substrate for cucumber seedling.3. In order to cultivate strong cucumber seedling, adding microbial agent to S3as S4to cultivate cucumber seedling. The results indicated that, S4can significantly increase the number of bacteria and fungi, urease activity and catalase activity, while decrease the number of actinomycetes. In the same time, all the growth indexes and yield of cucumber under S4were higher than S3.Therefore, commodity substrate:sheep manure:vermiculite=6:3:1with microbial agent was more suitable to be the substrate for cucumber plug seedling. In addition, it can also replace some peat so that reduce cost, which can provide more theoretical suggestions for cucumber plug seedling.
