The physical and chemical characteristics of ten material media were tested. Using cucumber as materials, composing two kind of complex media based on screened material media and contrasting with prevalent complex media ,effects of different complex media and size of plug on the growth and development of plug seedling were studies. Effects of fertilizer regime on the qualities and photosynthesis of cucumber seedling grown in the summer were also studies. The results showed as follows:1. Using the local light media , cottonseed shell, pig manure and rice chaff ash as material media of the complex media had the physical and chemical properties of the peat ,the normal media at home and abroad. They were perfect ingredients of complex media and could be used as peat substitutes. Although the physical and chemical properties of vermiculite, coal cinder and garden soil were inferior to peat, they had respective strongpoint for complex media, such as the higher water holding capacity and rich potassium content of vermiculite, the better aeration ability and rich minor elements content of coal cinder and the convenient source and balanceable nutrition elements contents of garden soil. Therefore, coal cinder with proper bulk and sterilized garden soil were better ingredients of complex media. What's more , vermiculite was also advisable material media in the rich region. Using perlite, river-sand and raw-dust as material media were much worse than the above-mentioned materials, but perlite's appropriate ratio of gas and water and stably physical and chemical properties , river-sand and raw-dust's good aeration ability, abundant source and cheap price made them not only improve complex media's performance but also reduce production cost when used with the other materials.2. Using the mixture of coal cinder and peat to replace the mixture of vermiculite and peat could not only reduce production cost but also attain better growing effect when raising cucumber seedlings. No worked rice chaff ash didn't properly compose the complex media of cucumber seedling due to it's high pH. Raising the cucumber seedling with the complex media of coal cinder and peat, plug with 72 holes (88cm3/hole) was appropriate. With the complex of vermiculite and peat, plug with 72,128 holes (40.5 cm3/hole) was advisable if twice raising seedling was adopted ( disparting 13 days seedlings);plug with 72 holes was also the best if disparting seedlings wasn't used.3. Blending fertilizer and media directly could be used when short period cucumber seedlings were raised in summer because this method not only was simply managed and easily popularized but also could meet the nutrient need of the seedling's growth and development.4. Raising cucumber seedlings with the mixture of peat and perlite , although 100~200mg/L phosphorus could meet the need of cucumber in seedling stage, increasing to 500mg/L could avail the development of the root, dry matter accumulation, and the fine seedling's index. However, heightening phosphorus to l000mg/L would have no beneficial effect on every aspect of cucumber seedlings except the root's development. No evident differences were found in the seedling's quality and nutrient uptake between 400mg/L and 200 mg/L treatments of nitrogen and potassium. The content of phosphorus in seedlings increased with the higher amount of phosphorus, but the uptake of nitrogen and potassium were decreased. Considering the effect of fertilizer treatments on seedling's photosynthesis, increasing nitrogen and potassium to 200ug/L and phosphorus to l00ug/L could heighten net photosynthetic rate in a whole day , enhance light saturation and apparent quantum yield ,decrease both light and CO2 compensation points. However, with nitrogen and potassium heightening to 400 ug/L and phosphorus to 1000 ug/L, the change of the mentioned photosynthetic index showed the opposite trend. Light saturation points began to decrease as long as phosphorus in media moved up to 500ug/L. Therefore, the opti...
