Three experiments were conducted in this study to investigate the feasibility for using the utilizing water hyacinth as feed. We discovered suitable ensiling techniques of water hyacinth by addition of different additives, compared the effect by feeding the Yangzhou geese by silage feed, and assessed the safety of animal products on heavy metal. The study provides the theoretical and practical basis for using the utilizing water hyacinth as feed.Experiment one. As high moisture of water hyacinth impacts additives, the study, by researching the effect of water hyacinth residue and different additives ensiled after being squeezed, discussed the effect of different additives on quality of high moisture silage. The water hyacinth were ensiled in six groups by adding additives as follows:formic acid plus vinegar residue, corn flour plus sucrose, corn flour plus straw, vinegar residue plus sucrose, vinegar residue, and one without additives for compare. Each group sets six bottles. Opening the ensilages at the fifteenth and thirtieth day respectively to be measured the fermentation quality and nutrient components of them. The result showed that all of the five additives could improve the quality of water hyacinth silage:High level of formic acid has anticorrosive effect for it, inhibited the nature fermentation of silages; The effect of adding WSC is better than that of adding vinegar residue, besides, the silage effect were improved with the increase of WSC.Experiment two. In order to study the effect of different water hyacinth silage diets content on Yangzhou geeseā€™s growth performance, slaughter performance and gastrointestinal development, a total number of1204-week-old Yangzhou geese were randomly assigned into3groups, and each group was replicated for four subgroups with10geese per replicate, the experiment time was42days. Diet in experimental groups contained75%and50%water hyacinth silage respectively, and basis diet in the control groups was entirely concentrated feed. The results showed as follows:1) Compared with the control group, the geese in the two water hyacinth silage experimental groups got significantly higher average daily gain of weight (P<0.05) during5-8week ages; the50%water hyacinth groups and the control groups made little difference (P>0.05) while significantly higher than the75%water hyacinth groups (P<0.05) during9-10week ages;2) The eviscerated ratio, semi-eviscerated ratio and abdominal fat rate in the75%water hyacinth silage groups were significantly lower than the control groups (P<0.05) while the50%water hyacinth silage groups and the control groups made little difference (P>0.05);3) The gastrointestinal weight and length in75%water hyacinth silage groups were heavier and longer than the control groups (P<0.05), while there was little difference between the50%water hyacinth silage groups and the control groups (P>0.05). These findings suggest that comparing with the75%water hyacinth silage groups and the control groups, the50%water hyacinth silage groups had a better effect.Experiment three. In order to research the influence of heavy metals in water hyacinth on the animal products safety, and measure whether the content of Cr, As, Hg, Pb, Cd are beyond the standard, the experiment diets fed sheep and geese were added to the maximum of water hyacinth on the basis of meeting the animals nutrition needs, and the experiment period was set30days and42days respectively. The result showed:1) The content of Cr and Cd in water hyacinth in the Taihu lake area exceeded the feed safety standard;2) Liver and kidney were the subject organs for accumulation of heavy metals, and Cd in liver and kidney of the sheep and geese fed by water hyacinth diets in the experimental groups was beyond the standard;3) The heavy metals in feed or animal products could be decreased by adjusting the content of water hyacinth additives or using heavy metal adsorbent.Seeing from the above results, we found that water hyacinth could be used as feed after being fermented. Considering production performance and heavy metals safety, proper proportion of water hyacinth silage diets conducted a better effect.
