China is a county with vast areas of fields and a variety of soil types, but there are lots ofsoil resources problems we have to be confronted with. Such as the limited and unevencultivated land and the low per capita because of the large population. With the rapiddevelopment of economic and urbanization, the soil quality degraded seriously. It is an urgentproblem the government and the agricultural sector should be solved as soon as possible, thathow to grasp the information and dynamic of soil resources.As a cross discipline based on geography science and information science, geographicinformation system is a collection of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote SensingScience (RS), Global Positioning System (GPS), computer graphics, virtual technology,multimedia technology and digital communications network technology. Geographicinformation system had brought a new direction and means for the development of soilscience. In this study, we built a soil management information system of Loess Plateau gullyregion based on GIS, through the data collection and analysis of the loess plateau gully region.The following results had achieved:1) First, relying on the farmland productivity evaluation project in Shaanxi province, wecollected amounts of soil nutrient data, soil type data, soil layer structure data, the relatedmaps and attribute data of Xunyi County which is a typical county. Then based on the dataanalysis and the unified encoding, building spatial database, which achieved the data unifiedmanagement of vector and space vector data and raster data and attribute.2) Through the demand analysis, getting the users’ request. With the ArcGIS Engineprovided by ESRI and Visual Studio2008development environment provided by Microsoft,using C#language, soil management information system of Loess Plateau gully region wasbuilt. There were four modules that GIS basic function module, data management module,subject evaluation module and digital mapping/report output module had realized in thesystem.3) In this system, according to the characteristics of the loess gully region and therequirement of soil management information system and its users’ demand, there were threemodules designed, soil productivity assessment, crop suitability evaluation and spatial dataintegration management. The research had provided a strong technical support and theoretical basis for the soil data analysis and data mining to guide the crop production and agriculturesustainable development decision-making for this region.
