Autumn potato is one of the important crops in Chongqing with the planting areaover1million mu. Autumn potato is seeded in fall and gained in winter. Its marketingtime just fill the market gap with high price and profit, which make the autumn potatobecame one of the favorite economic crops. Thus, autumn potato is of goodpopularization value. In Chongqing, the sunshine and heat resource are abundant andthe planting area of the last autumn crop is over4million mu. The climate has a hugepotential for the development of autumn potato production with the available landresources.Chongqing is the single and double season planting area for potato with theobvious three-dimensional climate characteristics. There is large suitable area forautumn potato planting. But now, the main type of planting autumn potato isdecentralized planting. In most cases, farmers always chose the planting area byexperience without scientific division. During the growing period of autumn potato, allkinds of meteorological disasters and climatic problems will cause the yield fluctuationand quality instability and affect the development of potato industry in Chongqing.Connected with the climatic problems about the autumn potato planting, this studyanalyzed the climatic characters of the growing season and the physiologicalcharacteristics of autumn potato. Based on the observations from1971to2000and the1:25Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data in Chongqing, compared with differentinterpolation methods and chose the optimal one, we made a space expansion for all themeteorological elements and established divisions for growing autumn potato by the useof the ARCGIS software. These divisions described the agricultural climate resourcesabout accumulated temperature, sunshine and precipitation and the agrometeorologicaldisasters about high temperature, autumn continuous rains and freezing injury. Based onthese divisions, we chose accumulated temperature, sunshine and freezing injury as thekey meteorological impact factors and established six climate suitability divisions forautumn potato. Such as normal sunshine and early-mid ripening, rich sunshine and early-mid ripening, normal sunshine and early ripening with less freezing, normalsunshine and early ripening with more freezing, rich sunshine and early ripening withless freezing and rich sunshine with more freezing. The results showed that the mainclimate suitability ozone located in low dams and valleys of west and north-east ofChongqing and the most area of south-east of Chongqing is the climate unsuitabilityozone. Furthermore, we designed the fine weather service system for autumn potatoplanting. This system has its own system framework and some function modules. Thesfunction modules can offer the service about the planting planning decisions and the keytechnical methods of agricultural weather forecast.This study established the agricultural climate division for autumn potato plantingin Chongqing, referenced the layout plan for Chongqing autumn potato industry,designed the fine weather service system for autumn potato planting and offered theClimate integrated decision-making and refinement of the agro-meteorological services.It showed the change possibility about the autumn potato planting from depending onthe weather to managing by the weather.
