Illicium brevistylum A.C.Smith belongs to the sole genus of the family Illiciaceaewhich is distributed mainly in the southern parts of China. I. brevistylum are shubs orevergreen trees and used in folk medicine for treating rheumatism arthritis and removingpain. For there is little previous reports concerning the phytochemistry of I. brevistylum,we took the research about the constituents from the stem bark of this plant systemically inchemistry and their anti-inflammatory activity. Forty-five compounds were isolated fromthe80%EtOH extract. Thirty-six compounds were determined by spectroscopicanalysis(1H-NMR,13C-NMR, DEPT,2D-NMR, IR, ESI-MS, HRESI-MS) and chemicalmethods. The thirty-six compounds were identified as copaene IB-01、5-tetradeceneIB-02、hexadecanoic acid IB-03、Hexadecanoic acid, methylester IB-04, diisobutylphalateIB-05、9,12-octadecadienoic acid ethylester IB-06、heptadecanol IB-07、dibutyl phthalateIB-08、1methyl-7-phenyl-2E-4E-6E-heptatrienodate IB-09、isopimaric acid IB-10、2,6-dimethoxy-4-(1-propen-1-yl) Phenoxy IB-11、8,11,13,15-Abietatetraen-19-oic acidIB-12、9β,13β-endoperoxide-abieta-8(14)-en-18-oic acid IB-13、 Methylabieta-8,11,13,15-tetraen-18-oate IB-14、 dehydroabietic acid IB-15、Methyl-16-nor-15-oxodehydroabietate IB-16、5-Hydroperoxy-β-eudesmol IB-17、Methyl15-hydroxydehydroabietate IB-18、 linoleic acidIB-19、12-hydroxydehydroabietic IB-20、cryptomeridiol IB-21、quercetin3-O-β-xylopyranoside IB-22、β-daucosterol IB-23、dihydrokaempferol IB-24、β-sitosterol IB-25、wulingzhic acid v IB-26、catechin IB-27、quercetin IB-28、 kaempferol IB-29、3,5,7-trihydroxylchromone-3-O--L-arabinopyranoside IB30、majucin IB-31、anislactone B IB-32、7-O-acetylanislactoneB IB-33, dihydro quercetin IB-34、 dunnianolide C IB-35、 taxifolin3-O-β-D-xylopyranoside IB-36.The anti-inflammatory effect of stem bark of Illicium brevistylum A.C.Smith wasindentified through in vivo and vitro experiments, Carrageenan induced ICR male modelsproved the prevention inflammatory effect of the total extract of the stem bark of Illiciumbrevistylum A.C.Smith.Through the NF-B vitro models, the petrol and ethyl actete partsshowed better anti-inflammatory effect. In the further process, the diterpenes IB-14andIB-26was identfied as the effective anti-inflammatory compounds.
