Objective:To explore the efficacy and safety of aripiprazole and quetiapinerespectively combined with valproate in the treatment of bipolardepression.Methods:Fifty-six patients who diagonized as bipolar depression byDSM-IV were randomly divided into two groups. The aripiprazole group(n=28) wasgiven aripiprazole combined with valproate and the quetiapine group(n=28) wasgiven quetiapine combined with valproate for eight weeks. The clinical efficacies oftwo groups were assessed with the Hamilton Depression Scale-17(HAMD-17) andClinical Global Impression(CGI) before treatment and at the end of the1st,2nd,4th,6th and8th week treatment.Meanwhile, the safety of two groups was assessedwith Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS).Results:At the end of treatment,theHAMD-17scores of two groups were significantly lower compared withpretreatment(p<0.05).At the end of the8th week treatment, the total clinical effectiverate between groups had no significant differences(92.9%vs.96.4%,p>0.05).Theincidence rates of adverse reactions were low which had no significant differencesbetween groups(39.3%vs.32.1%,p>0.05) and the degree was mild. Conclusion:Aripiprazole and quetiapine combined with valproate have samesignificantly effecacy in the treatment of bipolar depression. Both of them have mildadverse reactions, with high safety.
