Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the changes of posterior chamberstructure after phacoemulsification in combination with intraocular lens implantation byultrasound biomicroscopy, and to compare the pre-and postoperative intraocularpressures(IOP), and finally to clarify the relationship between IOP with the posteriorchamber depth.Method:83eyes from the53age-related cataract patients in our eye center wereused in this study. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (SW-3200,KINSCAN,SUOER)andnon-contact tonometer were used to measure central posterior chamber depth(PCD),3o’clock posterior chamber depth (3’PCD),9o’clock posterior chamber depth (9’PCD),the horizontal distance of sulcus to sulcus (STS) and the intraocular pressure, respectively, before and3months after surgery. Paired t-test was used to statisticallyanalyze the changes of these parameters before and after surgery. Pearson correlationanalysis was used to analyze the statistical significance of the correlation between thechanges of the intraocular pressure with the changes of central posterior chamber depth(PCD),3o’clock posterior chamber depth (3’PCD), and9o’clock posterior chamberdepth (9’PCD), respectively. The linear correlation was examined by linear regressionanalysis. Results: The data obtained from the patients3months after surgery showed thatthe average value of IOPs was11.64±2.81mmHg, STS was10.43±0.49mm, andPCD was0.32±0.13, respectively. The results from the patients before the surgeryrevealed that the average value of IOPs was13.69±3.21mmHg, STS was10.57±0.50mm, and PCD was0mm, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that there wassignificant difference between the patients before and after surgery. Pearson correlationanalysis revealed the significant difference between the changes of PCD and the changes of intraocular pressure (P<0.05), and also the existence of the negativecorrelation. The corresponding coefficients were-0.412. The linear regression analysisshowed the linear correlation between the PCD with IOP (p<0.05). There were nosignificant difference between the changes of3’PCD,9’PCD and the changes ofintraocular pressure before and after surgery (P values>0.05, with0.206,0.838,respectively).Conclusion: Our results indicated that phacoemulsification combined withintraocular lens implantation significantly decreased the IOP after surgery and thatdeepening the posterior chamber ameliorates intraocular aqueous circulation; Ourresults also showed the negative correlation between the depth of the posterior chamberwith the IOP.
