Annotation is an important supplementary means of translating which shallcomplement the information that cannot be conveyed by literal translation. Because ofthe untranslatability between different languages in terms of language and culture, thetranslator will inevitably encounter such difficulties in translating. It is necessary thatthe annotation play as a kind of supplementary means on that occasion. This thesis willdiscuss annotation in translating of documentary literature with a case study on The LastStand of the Tin Can Sailors. With several chapters selected from this novel as textmaterial, the translator has encountered many difficulties caused by literal translation bywhich the author’s writing purpose and original meaning cannot be fully expressed. Inorder to solve the problem, the translator chooses annotation as a supplementary methodin the process of translation. By summarizing previous scholars’ research achievementson annotation including the necessity of translation, the principle of translation, and theclassification of translation, meanwhile considering the stylistic features of the textmaterial, the translator sets classification by contents of annotation as the theoreticalframework of this thesis. Therefore, the translator will classify annotations selectedfrom chapters of text material by contents, and make an instances study. It is expectedthat this thesis provide assistance for future discussions on similar works.
