Abstract/Summary:
Instances for clarinet and electronics takes the natural sound of a clarinet and mixes it with pre-recorded clarinet sounds in its final form. By using only pre-recorded clarinet sounds in the electronics, Instances… explores and expands upon the idea of a clarinet solo performance, drawing on the established tradition of solo chamber music performance and our understanding of the natural sound of the clarinet. To do so, the soloist plays in and around the electronic sounds, investigating different relationships between performer and electronics. Formally, Instances… divides into five sections of three “instances” separated by two “interludes,” with the relationship between the soloist and the electronics varying by section. The three instances explore this relationship more closely through a variable and changing relationship. In the “FIRST” instance, the player begins to appear from within the electronic sounds; in the “SECOND,” the soloist explores new melodic ideas, becoming much more of a soloist; and the “THIRD” works as a reconciliation of these two, with both solo and background parts. The interludes are used as an opportunity to clear the musical palette, to wipe the ears clean before beginning the next instance.
