A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Stories From Charleston

Translation serves as a bridge of cross-cultural communication.But in the process of translation of literary works,the translation based on the cultural understanding is a priority.The source text of this practice report is a feature story,Stories from Charleston,published in November,2015 with Time.The source text contains a great deal of cultural information which caused many difficulties for the author when translating the story into Chinese.By referring to the recent scholarship in cultural translation,the author achieved substantial breakthrough for the translation of the source text and the completion of this practice report.Based on Nida's classification of culture,this practice report analyzes the difficulties in translation of the source text in terms of three categories: social culture,religious culture and linguistic culture.Then,under the guidance of domestication theory,the author applied the strategies of annotation and literal translation in solving the translation difficulties —1)in historical background from the perspective of social culture;2)in religious culture,using specific translation to cope with the difficulties in the choice of words in Christian culture;and 3)in linguistic culture,adopting free translation to solve the difficulties rendering the linguistic features of interviewees.Therefore,it comes to the conclusion that the principle of classification of culture guided the author to solve the difficulties in the translation of the feature story from the perspective of cultural interpretations.
