Interpreting is often called as "crisis management" by scholars and professional interpreters who have made a lot of efforts to explore triggers behind the crisis and corresponding coping strategies by summarizing their experience and building up models. This thesis, based on the Effort Model proposed by Danial Gile and a case study of19subjects’ recordings during their Simultaneous Interpreting exam, analyzes their common mistakes and explores problem triggers and tactics they resorted to. After introducing the subjects, materials and procedure of the exam, problem triggers are listed like unfamiliar words, short names, numbers and complex sentences which are syntactically and grammatically different from the target language. Meanwhile the effects of these challenges on subjects’ different Efforts and requirements are analyzed. Then tactics used by some subjects, such as generalization, correction, omission, anticipation and syntactic linearity, are expounded on by discussing how these tactics save subjects’ Efforts to help them cope with challenges and by offering the potential risks as well.It is further expanded by putting forward on-line and off-line strategies based on the rule that "Recommendations should be given on a case-by-case basis"(Gile,1995:196). On-line strategies refer to those at listening and comprehension as well as memory stages to increase their processing capabilities so as to meet demanding requirements. Off-line strategies are proposed later such as to be linguistic and extra-linguistic competent as well as to be physically and psychologically prepared with view to improving their SI performances.
