Simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting are two forms of conference interpreting. What’s the major difference between simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting in terms of working mechanism and delivery effectiveness? To answer these questions, this research compares the difference in delivery effectiveness in Chinese A to English B consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting with empirical research and questionnaires based on Daniel Gile’s Effort Model theory. The material the author uses is Jack Ma’s speech at the Seventh Netreprenuers Conference in2010. It is divided into two parts and both groups of interpreters perform simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting for both parts. The focus of this research work is ratio of information interpreted, accuracy, logic and fluency of interpretation. The result shows that simultaneous interpreters tend to suffer higher pressure, produce less information and be less logical than consecutive interpreters in high density paragraphs. The research result can help learners better understand simultaneous and consecutive interpreting effort models and circumvent problem-triggers in interpreting training. It can also help conference organizers choose the proper interpreting form.
