On Effort-economizing Strategies In TV Simultaneous Interpreting-a Case Study

As a fairly demanding and strenuous profession, TV simultaneous interpretingrequires interpreters to turn out good interpretation under great pressure. However,even the most seasoned interpreters can not avoid mistakes in during the process. Inlight of the reality, this thesis intends to explore Effort-economizing strategies torelieve interpreters’ cognitive burdens and help them complete interpreting taskssuccessfully based on the four Efforts proposed by Gile.Through an observation of US President Obama’s first inaugural speech, qualitydeterioration phenomena are found to exist in TV simultaneous interpreting. Then aquality analysis is conducted on the interpretation of Hong Kong Phoenix TV toillustrate the urgency of the research with statistics.Drawing on previous literature review, triggers of cognitive overload in TVsimultaneous interpreting are concluded. They are unfavorable working conditions,uncertainties, news language, matching of sound and image as well as lack offeedback. Then Effort-economizing strategies are proposed, namely knowledgepreparation, familiarization with the working environment and active involvement inthe program planning before interpreting, segmentation, omission, generalization,proper anticipation and concise delivery in the interpreting stage and self-retrospectionafter interpreting.This thesis is of great significance for it does not enrich studies in TVsimultaneous interpreting, but also provide interpreters with practical guidance toresolve the problem of quality deterioration.
