As an important feature of discourse, intentionality is the primary factor thattranslators should consider when conducting discourse analysis. As translationpractice is completed on the basis of discourse analysis, so the analysis ofintentionality can not be separated from translation. With a good knowledge of theauthor’s intention, readers can understand his or her thoughts, styles and writingtechniques better. Given that intentionality is of great importance in translationpractice, this thesis puts forward with the principle of intentionality with the aid ofthe theory of functional equivalence and Skopos theory. The core idea of TheIntentionality Principle is that translators should pay great attention to theinterpretation and the reconstruction of the internationality of the original text andshould choose flexible translation strategies accordingly.Literary translation, as a re-creation process based on literary creation, is verycomplex and diverse. In the process of literary translation, the principle ofintentionality is presented everywhere. A qualified translator should not onlyuncover the author’s intention in the creation of the work, but also maximize thereproduction of his or her intention in translation. Appropriate translationstrategies and methods are needed to reproduce intentions of literary works. Thethesis discusses two groups of translation strategies, adaptation/alienation andliteral translation/liberal translation, and makes comparison of the two. The thesisalso analyzes translation techniques like annotation, paraphrase, substitution, figure of speech, and shift of perspective. It is readers that choose translationstrategies for different works, as long as the strategy can reproduce the author’sintention faithfully and accurately. In addition, the thesis makes a detailed analysis of translations which violate the principle of intentionality.
