The Opera The Rise and Fall of the city of Mahagonny (hereafter as Mahagonny) is a magnificent works of cooperation of the outstanding Germany-American composer, Kurt Weill (1900-1950) and dramatic philosopher Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) in first half of20th century. Mahogany brings up new explanation of musical drama and especially in this drama, Brercht first time put forward the theory that modern drama is "episches Theater","alienation effect" is the core of "episches Theater" of Brercht, It claims that the rational effect should take the place of the emotional effect of drama. In this dissertation the author focuses on the influence of "alienation effect" in the music of Mahagonny, and put forward the dramatic concept of "alienation of music"."Alienation of music" is a method of music to realize "alienation effect", the ultimately destination focuses on the social function of music, motivating people to innovate the society. The thesis analysis’s five features of "alienation" of music by expatiating concept of drama of Brecht:1. Two forms of separation of emotion. Narrating the alienation of emotion of music and emotion of character, the alienation of emotion of vocal music and emotion of instrumental music, by which using method to make the "distance" between the audience and the drama, then call forth the cerebration of audience.2. The impugnability of music. The aim is to make audience feel that the content of gut is absurd and flirtatious, not identify stage events and arose rational consideration of audience.3. The narration of music. It gets off that audience getting in the flowery appearance of gut and express to the audience by most direct and fine expressing method.4. The gesture of music. It makes actors perform some essential gesture, which is a group gesture, having obvious subjective attitude, powerfully expressing the content of drama and awaking audience’s rational consideration.5. Music is independent to the other dramatic methods. Musical element keeps the independence among the mixture of each dramatic elements and, in some way, make audience not excessively be immersed in the mixed art work and to be released from passive appreciation. After expounding the above-mentioned features of "alienation", the article ulteriorly expatiates below five thoughts:the antipsychological effect of music; the impugnabable effect of music; the narrative effect of music; the gestic effect of music; and the effect of defying the Wagnerian’s Gesamtkunstwerk. This dissertation does research by putting the music of Mahogany under the concept of "episches Theater" and using the special research angle of "alienation of music", which discloses aesthetic interest of Mahogany and discovers new concept of opera music of composer.
