Datong was an important town in the northern that the capital of the country and the military town in the history of ancient China. It has experienced a huge transformation from a military town to a commercial town during the Ming to the Qing Dynasty. To investigate in depth the gradual process of the city, we can reveal its track of the development and prove its historical motivation of the transformation. It has typical significance to understand historical development of the northern towns along the Great Wall and also provide useful reference to the urbanization process in the modern of China.The text is divided into three parts:first of all, to analyze the formation and development and decline of Datong as a military town in the Ming Dynasty, pointed out the formation and development of Datong depends on clear relationship between the dynasty and Mongolia and its important strategic position, but it went to decline with changing of the historical environment after development because of lacking the internal motivation. The following is discuss to the reasons for transformation and the development of industry and commerce of Datong in the Qing Dynasty.The last, it reveals the main reasons of Datong transformation lies in its special geographical position, the change of social environment and government policy guidance.The academic study to the development trake of Datong during the Ming and the Qing Dynasty is relatively insufficient, this article is aim to benefit some aspects to the history research.
