It is very difficult for foreign students to master the uses of compound directionalcomplements due to their extensional means. In this paper, we analyze not only the wrongsentences but also the right ones in the way that we expect to find something for Chineseteaching as the second language. The paper begins with the introduction, including the background and the significanceof the study, the achievements by scholars, and the principle of selecting examples. The first chapter is the investigation of meaning of every compound directionalcomplement. The study shows that the resultant meaning is most frequently expressedamong three types of meanings. The second chapter is something about the error analysis. In this part, all the errors have been divided into two types: the structural error and thesemantic error. We find that compound directional complement is often confused with itscorresponding simple directional complement by learners. What’s more, the phenomenonof adding superfluous complements is very apparent. In the third chapter, we discusscauses of the errors. In the fourth chapter, suggestions are made. It is hoped that they canbe the help for teaching Chinese as the second language. Finally conclusions have beendrawn.
