Born in Belgium, Frans Masereel is a painter and lived through the twoworld wars.He is well known especially for his woodcut series. His creativeideas, socio-critical content and forms are greatly influenced by thebackground of the World War II. This thesis mainly focuses on his greatestwork-woodcut series and explores his realistic characteristics, including hiscontents, forms, images and feelings, etc..His content, easy to understand and meeting his admirers’ levels, theforms symbolically showing some social phenomenon or influencing theadmirers’ life attitudes and the images witnessing current social life truly andobjectively reflect his objective feelings. His thoughts and feelings are likefresh blood added to his work., which makes his work lively and objectively.This thesis aims at applying his woodcut series to black-and-whitewoodcut work, including being close to our social life and being good atdiscovering and collecting materials for creations. Not only should we learnfrom his theories, but we should practice more. Only in this way can we makeour work content and form united, full artistic images and appreciated byadmirers. What’s more, his realistic characteristics has a great effect on thecontemporary woodcuts accepted by the public easily.
