For the principle about the usage of Chinese appellations, the scholars in the academia have put forward clearly the "Arithmetic principle" and the "Emotional principle". The thesis is to study comprehensively and systematically about these principles of the usage of Chinese appellations. On the basis of the politeness principle, with combination of the Chinese traditional ethical concepts, the author will summarize specifically the historical development of the polite and self-depreciatory principle of Chinese appellations and further analyse systematically the relationship among the Arithmetic principle, the Emotional principle and the polite and self-depreciatory principle in the usage of Chinese appellations. The author will attempt to analyse the applied situation of the polite and self-depreciatory principle of Chinese appellations through studying Chinese appellations in some literary works and pragmatic examples to reveal the concepts of ethics and morals, as well as the cultural connotation about "Paying great attention to ceremony and propriety" and "prioritizing harmony", reflected by the polite and self-depreciatory principle and to point out the contemporary value.
