Narration Of Identity In Cultural Conflict

My Name is Red and Qin Qiang are well-known works of Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk andChinese writer Jia Pingwa. The two writers have different national identities, and the two novelshave different cultural background, though there are no apparent resemblances, the two novelshave one same theme, cultural identity in the cultural conflict. Based on the same theme, the twonovels have adopted post-Modernism narrative theory and accomplished the diversifiedrepresentation. Meanwhile, these narrative theories lead to the similarity of narrative art in the twonovels. Therefore, this paper compares the similar of the narrative art through the employment ofparallel study, in order to study the differences and resemblance of the two novels on narrativeform, analyze the reasons that cause the similarity, and discuss the influence of the cultural factors.With the basis of deep detailed textual analysis of the two novels, this paper chooses threeresearch perspectives. First, the multiplicity of narrative perspective was analyzed, the two novel’soriginal narrative perspectives produce a similar commingled narrative effect which make thenarration multiple; second, based on the Polyphonic novel theory and dialogism theory of M.M.Bakhtin, the Polyphonic structure in the two novels which make the narration dialogic wasanalyzed; third, the paper studies the metaphorical features of the two novel by analyze themetaphor images with thematic senses. Based on the analysis on the three perspectives, it isobserved that the narrative theory is actually the diversified representation of the theme. Multiplenarrative perspectives represent the commingled situation of individual cultural identity in thecultural conflicts; polyphonic structures represent the dilemma of national cultural identity whichwas caught between different cultures; metaphor images make the novel have allegoric featuresand represent the two authors’ nostalgia and salute to the traditional culture. The paper also studiesthe causes of formation of the narrative art, analyzes the influence of cultural background andcultural concepts on the two authors. It is concluded that, the similarity of narrative are of the twonovels is not a coincidence. The two authors’ similar social, historical and cultural backgroundhave great influence on their creation, the similar cultural phenomenon and time spirit reflect ontheir novels’ content, form, theme and art. In addition, the analysis explicates a fact that differentcountries share the identical social development route and analogical culture contradiction.In conclusion, the two novels complete the description of the theme, cultural identity in cultural conflicts, in spite of the resemblance and differences in their narrative theory and art. Thetwo novels each have their national characters as well as the contemporary literature features, andas such their narrative arts already have a inclination of culture integration. The two authorsdemonstrate their own standpoints about individual and national cultural identity, remind peoplethe importance and wonder of traditional culture, and present new proposals on culture integration.
