Du Fu wandered some places of the Yangtze River basin in old age. He led a wandering life in Chengdu, Kuizhou, and Hubei, Hunan. He was homeless, dependent, poor. So a wandering consciousness always followed him just like a shadow, which consists of loneliness, emptiness, depression, anguish, sadness, and death awareness. I think the wandering consciousness plays a very important role in his later poems. Du Fu’s wandering consciousness is a tragedy consciousness. He felt helpless and powerless because of the value of life and the meaning in life is hard to attain. And the wandering consciousness has profound tragic connotations include the loneliness for homelessness, the depression for setback, the sadness for aging. But Du Fu is a great poet. He endured the wandering consciousness and psychic pain. He faced the sufferings and resisted despair in positive attitude. He returned to daily life, enjoyed happiness of country life and family life, defeated mental crisis. More valuable is his kindhearted spirit and lofty moral character. He was concerned with the people and the nation even though he was suffering. Du Fu endeavored to struggle against the power of self-negation, search after the value of life and the meaning in life. So the wandering consciousness is also a positive self-realization consciousness. Du Fu became gradually an immortal poet in the wandering life.This article is a study on Du Fu’s wandering consciousness and his later poetry with some basic knowledge of psychology, culturology, sociology. It discusses Du Fu’s wandering life in the Yangtze River basin and his emotional experience. It expounds the connotations and characteristics of Du Fu’s wandering consciousness in his later poems mainly from four aspects:the forming reasons, the tragic connotations, the humanistic value and the artistic characteristics of his wandering consciousness. This article tries to reveal the true feature of Du Fu, the unique status and special significance of Du Fu’s later poetry in the history of Chinese literature.
