A company profile is a pragmatic text to offer a systematic introduction of a company, playing a vital role in facilitating the development of the company both at home and abroad.The research is done on the basis of60company profiles collected from websites in English-speaking countries and bilingual websites in China, all listed in Global Fortune500in2011. The thesis presents a comparison between company profiles in China and those in English-speaking countries from linguistic, cultural and stylistic pespectives. Under the guidance of the Skopostheorie, the purposes and translation brief for the Chinese-English translation of company profiles are put forward, together with five translation criteria, including conciseness, flexibility, informativeness, adequacy and appropriateness. Also illustrated in this thesis are some practical translation methods like addition, abridgement, substitution and rearrangements, and three requirements for effective Chinese-English company profiles, including keeping the essential information, meeting target audience’s needs, and establishing a favorable company image. In this way, the quality of Chinese-English translation of company profiles can be improved. |
