Translating, as one of the earliest human practices in terms of cultural communication, isfaithfully and smoothly conveying information expressed in one language by another one.During the whole translation process, correctly delivering information plays an important role.Since translation was practiced, the debate over “equivalence” has never stopped. The mostwell-known equivalence theory is the one initiated by Nida, entailing dynamic equivalenceand formal equivalence. This equivalence theory has long been quoted without any questionfor decades. Under this circumstance, Newmark put forward famous semantic translationtheory and communicative translation theory with regard to translation principles andstandards. His semantic translation and communicative translation shed some new lights onthe debate over “equivalence” and point out new thinking orientation. The paper mainlyanalyses semantic translation theory and communicative translation applied in translationpractice through translation examples of handling culture-involved information and words andchoosing natural expression to make readers understand easily in the process of translating theoriginal English novel Tiny Sunbirds Far Away. Semantic translation possesses the advantagesof word-for-word translation, literal translation and faithful translation, and communicativetranslation possesses the advantages of adaptation, free translation and idiomatic translation.Making use of the complementation of semantic translation and communicativetranslation to achieve the combination and supplement of these two translation principlesturns to be a perfect method. This article is the detailed report and summary of the wholetranslating process.
