A Report On The Translation Of "an Investigation Of Miao Nationality From A Land Expropriation Incident"(Excerpts)

This thesis is a report on the translation project “An Investigation of Miao Nationality from a Land Expropriation Incident”(excerpts). Nowadays, the academic exchanges between Chinese and foreign scholars are quite frequent. As a result, while numerous international academic papers have poured into China, Chinese scholars are becoming more and more familiar to their foreign counterparts by writing their own English papers or having their papers translated into English. So, it is safe to say that the Chinese-English academic translation is part and parcel of China’s policy of“going global”. From the perspective of Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory and Catford’s Translation Shift Theory, this paper conducts a research on some specific translation strategies adopted in the academic translation concerning culture-loaded information, proper names, linguistic gap between English and Chinese and different styles in writing, and a detailed case analysis will be presented in the Chapter three of this report.The present report consists of four chapters. Chapter one introduces the translation task; Chapter two describes the process of translation; Chapter three provides a case study of some examples taken from the translated version; and Chapter four is composed of a summary of and related reflections on this report. The present thesis aims to conduct research on suitable strategies of academic translation and to provide suggestions for the future practice of academic translation.
