The Beijing Danxian and the Suzhou Tanci are the two music genres of "Quyi" from northern and southern areas. The artistic characteristics of the plucked instrument accompaniments of these two are the main focus of the thesis. It’s believed that "Quyi" is given priority to singing and accompaniments are complementary but in fact they two are actually interdependent and symbiotic. There is a jargon that music consists of thirty percent of singing and seventy percent of accompaniments, which reflects the dialectical relationship between singing and accompaniments vividly and demonstrates the status and function of the accompaniments directly. The reason why plucked instruments are often chosen as the accompaniments is that the "Quyi" musics’ colloquial expressions which sound like singing and talking are much similar to the timbre of plucked instruments. The main accompaniment instruments are the big and small three-stringed (Sanxian) and pipa and these two accompaniments are relatively mature, not only playing essential roles on the formation of the singing style but also owning very important artistic value themselves.Currently, most of the academic study of Quyi remains in the case studies of music genres, primarily focusing on the Qupai, tune-patterns, plays, performances and local characteristics. And specialized research of accompaniments does not attract too much attention, so it is of great necessity and far-reaching significance to do the research of accompaniments. The thesis is divided into the following three chapters to study the art features of accompaniments. In the first chapter, the characteristics and the evolution of the related plucked instruments will be discussed and the detail is about the analysis of the feature of these instruments, the explanation of why they can be chosen as accompaniment instruments, and the review of the instruments’ history and accompaniment arts forming process. In the second chapter, the relationship between accompaniments and singing in Danxian and Tanci will be researched: over two perspectives of horizontal and vertical, the relationship between accompaniments and singing can be analyzed to reveal the internal laws of accompaniments. In the third chapter, the accompaniment function of Danxian and Tanci will be described and it can be summarized as the function of structure, rhythm and modeling, which will be explained in detail in the body part.
