An Introspective Research Report On English Subtitle Translation Of How I Met Your Mother

With the frequent cultural exchanges between China and the Western and therapid development of the network, more and more western films and televisionprograms swarm into China through the Internet. How I Met Your Mother is just oneof the most popular sitcoms which premiered on September19of2005and has beenupdated to the eighth season now. The author selected two episodes which are mosttypical of sitcom language and translated them. Through a series of analyses and thesummary of the translation process, the author finished the introspective researchreport.This report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the researchbackground and significance of the translation object—that is subtitle translation; thesecond chapter gives a brief introduction to the source, background and content of thesource text and makes a text analysis on its genre and linguistic features; the thirdchapter reviews the whole translation process, proposes to consider the theory of“perlocutionary equivalence” as a translation standard to seek the equivalent responseof the receiver in between the source language and the target language, and thenpoints out two major difficulties and the corresponding translation strategies; throughanalyzing concrete cases, the fourth chapter states several major issues in thetranslation process and proves the feasibility of translation methods adopted by theauthor; the last chapter summarized the whole translation process, sketches theauthor’s experience towards this translation, explains some limitations existing in thereport and proposes the suggestions for future studies. By means of having anintrospective research towards the subtitle translation in the sitcom How I Met YourMother, the author hope to not only raise the translation level and enrich thetranslation strategies but also be able to provide an reference in translation practice forlater translators or translation learner.
