Inverse morphemes word pairs, a special linguistic trend in Chinese lexical system,refer to the two-syllable compound words with the same morphemes and inverseorders. Those word pairs greatly rich the Chinese vocabulary and provide livelylinguistic materials for the communication of social members.On account of the Modern Chinese Dictionary (6th Edition)(Modern for short)and Modern Chinese Standard Dictionary (2nd Edition)(Standard for short), thispaper set up the closed database of inverse morphemes word pairs in modern Chineseby maximum statistical analysis. There are916pairs in the Modern considered intothe research scope while Standard has922pairs. In accordance with elements in thedatabase, the comparative analysis has been made by the quantitative and qualitativemethod integrated with description, explanation and comparison in the macro andmicro perspective combining with synchronic and diachronic level. The comparisonwas based on the definition of word pairs’ property and scope by virtue of themodern Chinese database in the Center for Chinese Linguistics of Peking University(CCL database for short) and Modern Chinese Common Vocabulary (draft). It aimedto further promote the standardization of inverse morphemes word pairs and modernChinese vocabulary system.The whole paper can be divided into six parts, and the introduction involves thebasis and values for the topic, literature review and research methodology. Literaturereview mainly talks about the research achievements on inverse morphemes wordpairs and points out the deficiencies and innovative points in the paper. The secondpart makes a detailed definition of the property in the perspective of morphemes,words, word groups, speech sounds, meanings, and symmetry of units and determinesthe research object and scope preliminarily, which lay a good foundation for the futureanalysis. According to the paraphrase in the dictionary, the third part has916word pairs in Modern and922in Standard on basis of the description for lexical meaningrelations in categories. The database is set up in a preliminary way with thecomparison for the two dictionaries in general. The fourth part and fifth part, body ofthe paper, make a detailed comparison for the collection of inverse morphemes wordpairs in the two dictionaries by use of CCL database and Modern Chinese CommonVocabulary. The two parts discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the collectionrespectively and the standardization. Some suggestions are also provided by theauthor.
